Painting with Scissors

Welcome back to A Room with a View after our summer break – time to meet our new class!

2014-5 names

In the afternoons, we are one big class of 29 children: and so we began our new term with a name project – getting to know the names of our new classmates, and creating name badges for our cloakroom pegs and our display boards.

At the Tate Modern in London at the moment there is a very special Matisse exhibition – unfortunately we were not all able to go to London to visit it, but we had a look in class at some of the work that is on display at present.

We found out a little bit about the artist, Henri Matisse, and how and why he used scissors and cut-outs to create his art.

  • Henri Matisse was born on 31st December 1869.
  • He trained as a lawyer, but decided to become a painter.
  • He fell ill later in his life and found he could no longer paint, so he began to cut out shapes and arrange them.
  • He liked what he saw when he did this, and started to create large scale cut paper collages.
  • He called the technique ‘painting with scissors’.
  • He died in 1954, aged 84.

Before we began our own cutting out, we thought about the features of his cut outs: bold colours, organic shapes, little detail. We also thought about our own composistions – and how we could include motifs to express our own personalities.

Cutting out the names required good scissor control – no pencils were allowed, and everything had to be cut free hand.

How well do you think you managed to cut out your name in the style of Matisse?
What features did you include?
What would you do differently next time, if you were to have another go at it?
